Congressman Presses DHS Chief on Border Definition
CNS News / CSPAN -- February 9
Border Patrol Data Contradicts Napolitano's Testimony That U.S. Has 'Effective Control of the Great Majority' of Both Northern and Southern Borders
Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tx): What I would like to ask is; Let's take the word operational out of there and define what the average American would say. What percentage control do you think we have of either of our borders now both of our borders?
DHS Chief Janet Napolitano: Well, I think in terms of, uhhh, manpower, technology, infrastructure, we have effective control over the great majority of both borders, uhh, uhhh, particularly at the ports uuhhh and then we are using manpower and new technology to help us between the ports. Uhhh, it is, uhhh, a project that is never ending, uhh, we are relentless in it. Uhhh, we recognize that when you are a country as large as ours with the kind of land borders we have that you are never going to seal those borders. That's an unrealistic expectation. Uhh, but I would say that my top priority in terms of effective control is the Tucson Sector of the Southwest border.
CNSNews Reporter: Do you agree with the secretary of homeland security that we have effective control of the majority of those borders?
Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tx): I think we're getting into an argument as to what the definition of control is. It's hard to believe we have control of the borders when we have a proliferation of drugs in this country. It is clear there are paths into this country.

It is time we defined what an acceptable level of border security is and then go about measuring it. |
