ABP Asks: Where Did They Cross?
August 6, 2008
According to a Border Patrol union Web site, on August 3, the Mexican military entered the United States somewhere “south of Ajo,” and held a Border Patrol unit at gunpoint. A map produced by American Border Patrol shows that the border south of Ajo has some of the best vehicle barrier coverage anywhere along the border with Mexico.
Ajo is nearly 40 miles from the Mexican border, so it is likely that the Mexican troops were much closer to, say, Lukeville. Mexican Highway 2 dives south at Lukeville, making it difficult to drive along the border east of Lukeville.
"There is a continuous vehicle barrier 18 miles east and 52 miles west of Lukeville," said Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol. “If the Mexican army unit got passed these barriers, DHS has some explaining to do.” One other possibility, according to Spencer, is that the Mexican Army merely drove across the border at the Port of Entry at Lukeville.
Spencer said a little investigative reporting by CNN would have helped make the story even more interesting and certainly more important.
