A Border Ruse?

Let us understand something; President George Bush is determined to erase the border with Mexico and legalized all illegal aliens in the United States. He wants a North American Union and he will continue to work toward that goal so long as he is in office.

The last thing Bush wants is a double fence along the border as called for in the Secure Fence Act of 2006. A fence cannot be turned off. A fence will not look the other way as illegal aliens flood across the border. And, finally, a fence cannot be stopped by a court order.

The Zero Tolerance program now being implemented along the border sounds good and it could work, provided that DHS has the detention space to handle more than one hundred thousand illegal aliens awaiting trial, which is quite doubtful. Of course, it could have worked seven years ago when Bush took office.

I have long advocated prosecuting aliens from Mexico the first time they are caught crossing the border illegally. I suggested that, during their detention, efforts be made to find work for the border intruders in Mexico. This would require the cooperation of Mexico and multi-national companies, but I don't think this is going to happen. Instead what we are about to see is probably a carefully thought out ruse.

This is the plan. The U.S. will implement a Zero Tolerance program. At the same the border fence project will be slowed to a snail's pace. The Zero Tolerance program will cut border crossings significantly because Mexico will cooperate by not interfering in any meaningful way.

Claiming that the border is under control, Bush will return to Congress to get some kind of amnesty, or at least take the issue out of the first primary elections. Once that is done the Mexican government will step in and, using the $500 million it got to fight the drug war, invoke the Memorandum of Understanding signed by President Bill Clinton, and gum up the works.

It is important that we watch the implementation of the Zero Tolerance program and progress in completing the border fence.
