Letter to the Editor
Arizona RepublicCalifornia's lesson is that not that reforms will not stop illegal immigration-the lesson is that some will stop at nothing to defeat immigration reform.
Major elements of Proposition 187 were found unconstitutional by one federal judge.
The "court settlement" to which you refer was a sham mediation (1) that included only opponents of the measure. Instead of allowing the will of the people to be tested by the U.S. Supreme Court, the President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, and the Governor of California, Gray Davis, used this mediation to terminate the appeals process. Records show they killed Proposition 187 because they feared it would be found constitutional.Illegal immigration has destroyed the economic and social fabric of much of California against the expressed wishes of the vast majority of voters. Los Angeles is a Third World city.
Those, including the Arizona Republic, who distort the history of Proposition 187 do a disservice to the democratic process. Those who continue to thwart the will of the people when their nation, their culture and their standard of living are being attacked, are skating on very thin ice.

(1) "But whoever suggested to Gov. Gray Davis that he mediate the constitutionally of Proposition 187 badly misunderstands mediation's role in our democracy and in dispute resolution. And if the mediation goes forward, both constitutional law and mediation are at risk."
